When it comes to the term poker theory there will be those who are somewhat dismissive of the term. The reason for this is that poker has always been portrayed as an exclusively male blue collar game that is seemingly contemptuous of any psychological analysis of the game.
Now, such an assessment is insulting to a multitude of people on a multitude of levels and that is because it is an ideology based almost exclusively on stereotyping. If we could pull out one aspect of the stereotypes present therein we could make a more accurate analysis based on a more cohesive analysis. We can start this by looking at the term poker theory.
What is Theory?
When it comes to the term poker theory most people will get hung up on the words theory and associate it exclusively with the realm of antiseptic science. In other words, theory comes from the realm of academia and poker does not. Hence, anyone who attempts to categorize or define something such as “poker theory” will find him or herself over analyzing a very simple game. This, however, is a definition based on a false premise.
First of all, the notion of a theory is not exclusive to science. A theory can center on any subject one ponders about. If one has a notion or belief regarding a certain poker strategy, but can not outright prove the notion then they have an unproven poker theory as opposed to a poker law.
For example, if someone believes that the drawing of a straight flush will occur after so many different deals of a card the person is essentially devising a poker theory based on the notion of mathematics. However, since there is no concrete proof that this will occur unless it is clearly demonstrated over and over again under the same conditions then it remains a theory as opposed to being a law.

Now, some may ask if this type of scientific analysis is necessary as poker has long since existed without such analysis. The answer is: well, it wouldn’t hurt would it? What needs to be taking into consideration here is the fact that poker has now become a staple of the online community and that means it is accessible to more and more people.
Many of these people are new to the game and require supplementary material to understand it and that is published works on the subject are helpful. As such, there is really nothing wrong with coming up with various theories provided they are rooted in common sense reality and logic. So, what is the harm of a poker theory? None.
