When it comes to the subject of poker mathematics there will be those who approach the subject with incredulous ambivalence. That is to say, when the average poker player hears that there is a connection between mathematics and statistics they will roll their eyes and ignore the subject.

Part of the reason for this is that serious and lifelong practitioners of the game are not exactly known for describing in terms of the various mathematical and statistical aspects of it. So, there comes the question as to who is coming up with these various notions in regards to the mathematical components of poker. Clearly, the roots of this are in the academic world and this would prove to be another reason (by some individual’s standards) to avoid taking the subject serious.

This is because it would seem that the academic individual is removed from the realm of actually playing the game and the opinions on the subject of poker mathematics amounts to little more than nonsensical research. This is not really an accurate assessment, but it is an assessment that many people prescribe regardless.

So Why The Fuss?

So why is there such information out there now in regards to the amount of information of poker mathematics out there? Part of the reason rests on the fact that thanks to the expansion of the internet and the resultant expansion of online gaming, more and more people who are not traditional gamblers or poker players have become interested in the game. As such, these individuals are looking for tips and advice on how to win at poker and how to gain an edge. This is where poker mathematics comes into play.

The Role

When it comes to the game of poker, a deck of cards contains 52 individual cards (yes, there are 53 if you add the joker) and that means the number of combinations – while massive – are finite. Because of this there are those who like to play the odds games with poker mathematics so as to greatly reduce one’s chance of losing and, conversely, increasing the odds of winning.

Now, this does not mean that poker mathematics will provide an easy way of winning the game (it won’t), but it can provide a bit of a greater understanding of the game beyond the common, conventional wisdom and understanding of the way poker is played and won. So, it would not hurt to explore it, but there are no miracles to be found within it.
